Immortality Guaranteed!
Do you remember how awe struck were you when you got your first job? I remember the day I got my first job. My happiness knew no bounds. I can vouch for you too on this. But when you started working and a couple of years into your job, you realized that you have become a part of the mundane.
When I came to Mumbai back in 2008, like any other fresher from a b-school, I also had a plan in mind- To make an impact. But then I saw something that made me think. I saw my colleagues, my seniors in the office stuck to the laptop screen, punching numbers into MS Excel and rolling out worksheets after worksheet hour after hour, day after day, year after year. All they cared about was meeting the deadlines, pay hikes, promotions. This wasn’t what I had imagined my life would be. First I thought something was wrong with me but when I talked to my friends, my colleagues, I found out they also felt the same way. So what happened? Where did we lose ourselves?
When your 4th grade teacher asked you what you wanted to become when you grew up, did you say, “I want to become an Equity Research Analyst.” No! You said that you want to become an astronaut or the prime minister. The answer is not important; what’s important is the dream that you had nurtured. You wanted to do something big, something grand with your life. Why did you lose the dream?
One fine Sunday, I was watching a documentary on some hypothetical future wherein immortality would be a reality. One of my class mates used to wear a t shirt which had a small imprint “One Life, Live it”. Suddenly, I realized that immortality is already exists but we have been so lost in our daily life, earning a livelihood for ourselves, our family that we have lost the essence of it. Immortality doesn’t mean living forever but it means living each day forever. Let me ask you a question. When was the last time you danced in rain? When was the last time you bunked your office to watch Sachin play? When was the last time you rang somebody’s door bell and ran away? When was the last time you did something for the first time?
Let’s take this to a philosophical level. Why is that it gives pleasure to you when you cook on a weekend but if you if you become a chef in a restaurant, it doesn’t seem that brilliant. That’s because as soon as your hobby becomes your profession, you tend to take it more seriously. That’s where the problem lies. Let me tell you another thing. Whosoever says that their profession is their hobby and hobby is their profession is a liar. Hobby and profession can never be the same. It may be the case that you pursued your hobby and entered a related profession. The demarcation between a hobby and a profession comes because of “Money”. You take up a profession to earn money. Writing this blog is my hobby but if I were to write here to earn a living hood, the very spirit will vanish.
I don’t have a potion that would bring immortality to you. Immortality exists in your attitude towards life. If you want to be immortal, all you have to do is live your life the way you always wanted to. Lose all your inhibitions. Do something creative, do something different; at least do something! You don’t want to be 50 and reflect back on life. Do it today and immortality will be guaranteed! I’m just sayin!!!
